Director | Assistant Professor of Geography kate.hale@ubc.ca
Research Interests: Snowpack, climate, and ecohydrologic variability and drivers of water availability across alpine and Arctic landscapes.
Bio: From the USA Midwest, received a BS in Environmental Biology from Georgetown University, and MS and PhD in Geography from the University of Colorado—Boulder. Was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and University of Vermont prior to settling into southwestern British Columbia and the Coast Mountains.
Beyond the lab: Running, climbing, mountain biking, books, dogs, and scrappy backyard adventures.
MSc Student
Research Interests: Impacts of climate change and extreme weather events on mountain glacier change in the Pacific Northwest, using tools such as remote sensing and field-based methods.
Bio: Originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, completed a BS at the University of Toronto in Physical and Environmental Geography and GIS.
Beyond the lab: Skiing, baking, and spending time outdoors.
MSc Student
Research Interests: Remote sensing and imagery, streamflow monitoring, and high-elevation snowpacks as they relate to seasonal water forecasting.
Bio: Born and raised in New Hampshire, USA, graduated from Bates College with a BS in Earth and Climate Science.
Beyond the lab: Finding joy in even the thinnest, iciest snowpacks.
Honor's Thesis Student
Research Interests: Impacts of changing climate patterns on snowmelt in relation to snowpack distribution and downstream water management. Working with local weather and remotely sensed Lidar data to create models evaluate snowpack/climate metrics.
Bio: Originally from Kamloops, British Columbia, currently completing an undergrad in Environment and Sustainability with a minor in GIS.
Beyond the lab: Climbing, skiing, and music!
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Research Interests: The glacial-to-marine hydrological cycle with an emphasis on how snowpack, glacier melt, and precipitation are partitioned across alpine and coastal water systems. Examining the movement of snowmelt through river networks into marine environments and its influence on downstream biogeochemical and ecological processes.
Bio: Originally from Delta, British Columbia and recently completed a Bachelor of Arts in Environment and Sustainability from the University of British Columbia.
Beyond the lab: Anything outdoors! Fishing, hiking, camping, or cozying up with a good book.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Bio: From Calgary, AB, competed on the Canadian National Biathlon team and at the 2022 Olympics, before moving to Vancouver. Currently completing a BSc in Natural Resources Conservation, majoring in Science and Management at UBC.
Beyond the lab: Being outside looking at plants, running, biking, skiing, gardening and cooking.
